In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
