Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
