Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
