The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
