Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included little new data.
