Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
